Recently I pulled out my Yashica FX to play with and it was out of commission. I couldn't open the film compartment and there were pen markings on the lens (the worst thing that could happen!).
I've been obsessing over getting a DSLR since I was gifted a Fujifilm Instax, and my Nikon P&S couldn't do more that I wanted it to. But for my purely hobby hands and a beginner, I wasn't sure if DSLR is right for my budget and needs.
I conducted hours of research on entry-level DSLRs, mainly Nikon D3200 ($300+), D3300 ($400+) and Canon T5 ($300+) and SL1 ($500+), and what's best for beginners.
I even went to Best Buy to test them out.
Alas, it all came down to cost and after mulling it over for a week, I looked into SLRs. Again Canon and Nikon brands are out of my budget but Pentax K1000 sounded solid.
Almost all the forums I read said it's a great student camera that takes great photos and has everything you need to start learning photography -- ISO, aperture and shutter speed. And really, basics are all I really need at this point. Plus there's a certain feel to film photography that I love.
After comparing prices between new and used, I bought a used one in acceptable condition that comes with 50mm lens. Grand total? $75! Using my reward points!
Yeah I could've waited until I accumulated enough points to get a DSLR, so why the rush? I'm planning trips and practice is the best way to get better. So with this in tow, I can be even better when I eventually have a DSLR.
Anyway, I'm eagerly waiting for it in the mail! Eee!
