I had class this past weekend but Mike still came to visit me in NYC. My weekend class was on Friday from 4-8pm and then 9-5pm Saturday and Sunday. I felt bad for leaving Mike mostly alone the entire weekend and only spending a few hours each day together.
On Friday, we met up at Souvlaki GR near Columbus Circle for dinner. The decor made me feel like I was on an island and the food was only okay. Maybe it was really authentic Greek food and I don't have that acquired taste.
We started with tyrokafteri (spicy feta) and it was sooo salty. Not my thing. Then we had pork skewers which had a lot of fatty parts that I like. It tasted great together with pita bread and tzatziki. For entrees, we had loukaniko pita which is Greek sausage wrapped in pita with tomato, red onions, feta and tzatziki. That was also okay... I wish there was more tzatziki because it was pretty dry.
The weather has gotten pretty chilly and I was freezing. Snowstorm Juno came and went (although I wasn't in town for that; I was at a conference near Boston that weekend), and by this time, the snow was mostly gone and the streets of NYC weren't as nasty.
On Saturday, Mike slept in at home while I woke up at 6:30am to catch the 7am subway to be in class by 9am. My commute is a crazy 1.5 hours! I was pretty wiped by Sunday.
After class, we met up in Chelsea for dinner at the Chelsea Market. We walked around and had some Thai food. I don't remember the name and I didn't like the beef rice entree that Mike got. The rice was cooked in ginger so it was really spicy. I got chicken and pork dumplings which were really juicy. Not bad.
Then we watched Kung Fu Panda 3! Mike loves Kung Fu Panda so of course we had to watch it. I think he said that's why he had to come to NYC this weekend - to watch Kung Fu Panda together on opening weekend :)
The movie was pretty funny and cute but I did think they tried a little too hard. Dreamworks was probably trying to bank on it one last time.
On Sunday, Mike was supposed to come to school with me so he could study for his CFA but he couldn't make it. It was too early haha. He came around lunch time instead and we had brunch at Serafina near campus.
We had their orange cinnamon brioche french toast, truffle oil french fries and 3 sunny side up eggs with sausage. I really loved their french fries, which were really fancy McDonald fries. The french toast was okay. It actually tasted really chocolatey, no hint of orange of cinnamon. The chocolate flavor was a little too much for me.
Mike stayed in the library until I finished class at 4:30pm (early!) and then we had ramen at Jin Ramen. I went there last semester after a long study session for my comp exam and it was a good choice for cheap delicious meal on a cold winters night. I prefer Jin Ramen over Terakawa Ramen in Philly. The miso soup is spicy and had more flavor and I like the chew of the curly noodles. Chewy like wheat noodles and al dente.
Afterward we went to a little bakery near Jin Ramen (don't remember the name) for dessert. We had their chocolate cream puff and chocolate mousse cake. Both were pretty good. Mike also got bubble tea and it tasted weird... and we made a rule to never buy bubble tea from a non-Asian place.
Oh, and I just want to point out that Mike used the treadmill desk at my school's library to help himself study :P
I have the same weekend class during Valentine's day weekend, so I'm visiting Mike this coming weekend. No real plans except to hang out and probably study. It sounds boring but it's super nice for us (or me at least) to be able to do this. Long distance is hard that way!
